2009

Arising from an exceptional collaboration between six artist-run centres in the Montreal area, VIVA! Art Action invites you to discover the bustling energy of contemporary action art from here and abroad. This second edition includes more than fifty events—all free—with artists from the Americas, Europe, and Asia undertaking an array of public and participatory interventions, manoeuvres, and performances.

Generally speaking, action art is a multidisciplinary art form that explores the relationships between artist, public, space, and time, and considers the body—both individual and social—and relations as materials and tools for enabling an aesthetic reflection on our cultures. Though it first appeared in the early 20th century, the last ten years have seen a growing interest in action art, which has greatly contributed to the performing arts such as dance, theatre and music in addition to expanding the idea of community in artistic practice.

Once again, the Bain Saint-Michel will serve as headquarters for the event. In an environment intended to stimulate and encourage encounters and exchanges between artists and the audience, this site will play host to daily performances, conferences, artist talks, communal dinners and parties. VIVA! events will also take place in the streets, within artist-run centres, and in the surrounding urban spaces.

Check the VIVA! blog to keep on top of the spontaneous events in the evolving program and be sure to join us at Bain Saint-Michel to help VIVA! celebrate performance in all its permutations.
